Asheville's winter answer opens Saturday

October 20, 2026

Ballcrank Pickleball Club holds its grand opening Saturday, Oct 24, 3 to 7pm, at 115 Reems Creek Road in Weaverville: 12 indoor cushion courts, a pro shop with paddle demos, a bar and cafe, and showers. Day players pay $15 for a two hour session. Annual members pay $5. That is strikingly cheap next to franchise tiers.

In Ballantyne, two free courts opened atop a parking deck, open daily 8am to 7:30pm, first come first serve, with free paddle borrowing. And at the PPA's Veolia North Carolina Open in Cary, Peak Time Pickleball coach Liz Truluck won a 14-12, 3-11, 11-9 mixed Round of 32 match.

Why it matters: While the national franchise model restructures, the Carolinas keep solving access from the bottom up. A cheap independent club here, free courts on a parking deck there. This is what the sport looks like when it works.
